The one sum behind every percent-off tag

Almost every markdown sign boils down to the same single question: a price, a percentage, and what is actually owed at the till. This tool answers only that question, on purpose, so a price and a percent off turn straight into a pay figure and a saving with nothing else to configure. If the number you are checking involves a second code stacked on top of the first, a flat-amount voucher rather than a rate, or working backwards from a receipt to find the original price, the discount calculator covers all three of those; this page stays deliberately narrower.

The narrower question is still the one most people actually have standing in front of a rail of reduced stock or a checkout screen showing a percentage: a price is displayed, a discount is promised, and the only thing missing is what the two combine to.

The formula, worked in full

A percentage off is a share taken away from the price, so what remains is always the price multiplied by whatever share is left. Taking 20% off means 80% of the price survives, so multiplying by 0.8 gets to the answer directly, without working out the discount amount as a separate step first.

discount amount = price × (percent ÷ 100) you pay = price − discount amount you pay = price × (1 − percent ÷ 100)

Take $50 with 20% off: the discount amount is 50 × 0.2 = $10, so the pay figure is $40. Multiplying $50 by 0.8 lands on the same $40 in one step, and once that shortcut feels safe, it is the quicker of the two routes every time.

Doing it in your head: three shortcuts worth keeping

Three tricks cover almost every percentage a shop is likely to show you, and each one turns a multiplication into something closer to a glance.

The 10% anchor. Finding 10% of any price just moves the decimal point one place left, so $50 gives $5 and $84 gives $8.40. Every other common rate is a multiple or a fraction of that one anchor figure: double it for 20%, treble it for 30%, halve it for 5%. A $120 jacket at 30% off needs only 10% of $120 ($12), trebled to $36, subtracted from $120 for a pay figure of $84.

A quarter off, halved twice. 25% off is exactly a quarter, and a quarter is easiest to reach by halving twice rather than multiplying by 0.25 directly. Half of $80 is $40, and half of that is $20, which is the discount amount; the pay figure is the $80 minus that $20, or $60 reached directly by halving twice more.

Converting a fraction to a percentage off. Sale language sometimes talks in fractions rather than percentages, "a third off" or "quarter price", and matching them to the right rate avoids a mistake at the point of comparison.

"A third off" and "33% off" are the same offer, and knowing the pairing above settles the question without reaching for a calculator at all.

Why "up to 70% off" rarely means 70% off

The word doing the work on that sign is "up to", and it is a ceiling, not an average. It states the single largest discount attached to any item somewhere in the sale, not the rate applied across the rail a shopper is actually standing in front of. A stand offering "up to 70% off" might reasonably have most of its stock reduced by 20% or 30%, with only a handful of end-of-line sizes or colours carrying the full 70%.

None of that makes the sign untrue, since somewhere in the range the top figure genuinely applies. It does mean the number on the sign is a poor guide to the number on the price tag in your hand, and the only way to know the real discount on a specific item is to check the price tag itself rather than the headline percentage above the rail.

The reference price a sale sets you against

A displayed "was" price next to a sale price does more than state a fact; it sets the figure a shopper judges the deal against, an effect long studied in behavioural economics under the name anchoring. A $150 "was" price makes a $90 sale price look like a strong cut, regardless of whether $150 was ever a common selling price for that item. The percentage off is only ever as informative as the reference price it is calculated from, which is one reason the pay figure and the saving in real money are worth checking alongside the percentage, not instead of it.

Reading the discount-step table

The table beside the donut holds the same price fixed and steps the discount from 5% up to 90% in five-point jumps, so a $50 jumper at 15% off can be read against the same jumper at 20% or 25% off without retyping anything. The row matching whatever percentage is currently set is marked, making it easy to see how much moving up or down a single sale tier is actually worth in cash.

Questions people ask

Is 20% off $50 the same as saving $20?

No, that mixes up the percentage figure with a cash figure that happens to look similar. 20% of $50 is $10, so the saving is $10 and the pay figure is $40. The confusion usually comes from the number 20 appearing twice, once as a percentage and once, coincidentally, close to a cash amount that is not actually correct here.

What is the fastest way to work out 15% off in my head?

Find 10% first, then add half of that 10% figure again, since 15% is exactly 10% plus 5%. On $40, 10% is $4 and 5% is $2, so 15% off comes to $6, leaving a pay figure of $34.

What does "up to 50% off" actually guarantee?

Only that 50% is the largest reduction applied somewhere in the sale, not the typical one. Most items on the same rail are commonly reduced by less, and checking the individual price tag is the only reliable way to find the real percentage on a specific item.

Can a percentage off ever leave a negative price?

No. 100% off brings the pay figure to exactly zero and nothing further, since a discount is only ever a share of the price it is applied to, never more than the whole of it.

Is a quarter off the same deal as 25% off?

Yes, they are identical, one written as a fraction and the other as a percentage. A quarter is one part in four, which is 25 parts in a hundred, so the two phrases describe exactly the same reduction.

Does this calculator handle two discounts applied together?

No, this page is built around one price and one straight percentage off. A second discount on top, a fixed-amount voucher, or working back from a sale price to the original all belong on the discount calculator, which covers those three cases directly.

Why does the same percentage save different amounts on different prices?

Because a percentage is relative to whatever it is calculated from. 20% of $20 is $4, while 20% of $200 is $40, ten times as much cash for an identical rate. Comparing percentages alone tells you nothing about the money involved without also knowing the price each one is taken from.
