How this estimate is put together

The demo prices a job the way most man-and-van operators cost one over the phone: an hourly rate for the van and crew, a set of typical hours for the size of the move, single item, a few boxes, a studio flat or a 1-bed flat, and a firm two-hour minimum booking underneath all of it. A second pair of hands speeds the job up, so booking driver and mate trims the hours even though the hourly rate is higher, and the calculator shows both effects rather than picking one. Stairs or no lift at either end add their own loading-time row rather than a vague surcharge, and the first eight miles of the drive are included before mileage kicks in at a rate per mile, the way most local operators price a short hop across town differently from a run out to the next city. None of these numbers is special: when we build a calculator for a real man-and-van business, the hourly rate, the typical hours, the mileage allowance and the minimum are all theirs, entered once and changed whenever they like.

The point is not the arithmetic, which is deliberately simple. It is that the customer gets an honest, itemised range in under a minute for the exact job in front of them, and the operator gets a lead that already contains the move size, the crew, the distance and whether there are stairs to deal with. The conversation that follows starts from "what time suits you" rather than "how much roughly".

Why the small jobs need their own calculator

Someone moving a single sofa or clearing a studio flat is not shopping the way a family booking a full house move does. They usually want one number, fast, and they will often book whichever operator answers with a figure first rather than wait for a callback. A widget that turns the size of the job, the crew and the miles into a price on the spot beats a "message us for a quote" box every time with this customer, because it removes the one thing standing between them and a booking: not knowing roughly what it costs. Showing the two-hour minimum honestly matters just as much here, since a customer moving one item who is quoted a flat hourly rate with no floor explained will often assume it means thirty minutes of work, then feel misled when the invoice says otherwise. Stating the floor upfront, as its own line, heads that argument off before it starts and lets the smallest jobs still convert into bookings rather than one-star reviews.
