The demo prices a system from its size and the roof it sits on, the way most installers do a first pass before ever visiting: a supply-and-fit rate per kWp for the panels, inverter and mounting, a fixed allowance for scaffold access, and a premium on top for slate or flat roofs, which take longer to mount and flash than a standard pitched tile roof. Battery storage, bird protection guards and an EV charger are all priced as optional extras, since not every household wants or needs them. None of these numbers is special: when we build a calculator for a real solar installer, the rates, the sizes, the questions and the rules are all theirs, entered once and changed whenever they like.
The point is not the arithmetic, which is deliberately simple. It is that the homeowner gets an honest range and a rough idea of what the system will generate in under a minute, and the installer gets a lead that already contains the system size, the roof type, the battery preference and the customer's expectations. The conversation that follows starts from "when can you come and survey the roof" rather than a cold "how much roughly".
Why solar buyers want a number before they'll book a survey
Solar is a high-consideration purchase, thousands of pounds spent on the promise of savings that arrive slowly over years, and it has attracted its share of doorstep and phone sales pressure that has left homeowners wary. Many will have already used a general research tool, our own solar panel calculator among them, to get a feel for panel output and payback before they ever think about contacting an installer. What a calculator like this one adds is a real price range tied to a real system size and a real roof, at the exact point a browsing visitor turns into an enquiry. A transparent estimate does not scare off genuine buyers: it screens out the tyre-kickers and hands the business survey bookings from people who have seen a sensible number and are still keen to go ahead.
